Tax Collector’s Office

Please click Revenue Department News for Press Release and Legal Notice to appear in the River East News Bulletin as well as the Covid-19 Pandemic measures we are taking.

Tax Bills have been mailed!  They are available online.  If you believe you should have a bill and are missing it, please contact us.  We strongly urge residents to pay their bills via USPS (mail), drop off in the secure box attached to the south side of the building or online.

The Tax Collector’s Office is open to the public for normal business hours.  We do close for lunch from 12:30-1:15 Monday – Thursday.  If you decide to come into the building you will be asked to enter on the north side and exit on the south side of the building.  A Face Mask is required while remaining in the building and the hallways have been marked for distancing.  Only one person will be permitted in the office at time.  Please have your check made out and copies of the bills you wish to pay with you so we can wait on you as expeditiously as possible.  Once you arrive if you don’t wish to wait we have installed a 2nd secure box in the hallway to drop your payment and you will be sent a receipt.

Mission Statement

Our mission is to annually collect the highest percentage of taxes contributing to the lowest possible mill rate and financial stability of the town through application of state statutes, policies and enforcement tools and assisting the public to better understand taxation, while providing courteous and consistent customer service.

Duties/Responsibilities

The principal functions of the Collector of Revenue are to bill, collect and record tax, sewer, sewer assessment and parking violation revenue in a timely and accurate manner. In addition, serve as a central location for receipt of other town departmental revenue. It is also responsible for all delinquent billing, enforcement, filing and releasing liens.

Connecticut General Statutes dictate the procedures to be followed for the billing and collection of taxes as well as the record keeping involved and also govern when and how bills are sent, what notice is to be given or published concerning taxes, the rate and applicability of interest, how liens are applied; and what means of delinquent collections are permitted.

Beginning July 1, 2017 due to staff coverage it will be necessary for the Assessor’s Office and the Tax Office to close Monday – Thursday from 12:30 – 1:15 for lunch.
